Gerhard Erdtmann

Gerhard Erdtmann was a pioneering German paleopalynologist who studied geology, botany, and chemistry in Berlin starting in 1909, graduating in 1920 after publishing 18 papers. He described hundreds of new pollen and spore taxa, revolutionized palynotaxonomy with the turmae system developed with G.W.O. Kremp, and authored the monumental five-volume 'Synopsis of the genera of the Sporae dispersae.' Remembered as one of the founding fathers of paleopalynology in Germany, he advanced paleobotany through his work with the Geological Survey.
