George Washington Woodruff

George Washington Woodruff (1864–1934) was an American college football player, coach, rower, teacher, lawyer, and politician, best known for coaching the University of Pennsylvania to national championships in 1894, 1895, and 1897, and innovating plays like the 'guards-back' and onside kick. He also coached at Illinois (1903) and Carlisle (1905), compiling a 142–25–2 record, before entering law and politics, serving as Acting U.S. Secretary of the Interior (1907), a federal judge in Hawaii (1909), and Pennsylvania Attorney General (1923). Inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1963, he had no known works as a literary author.
