George E. Murphy

George Earl Murphy was an American psychiatrist renowned for his seminal contributions to research on suicide, psychotherapy, and alcoholism. He served as Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at Washington University School of Medicine and was part of a team that advanced American psychiatry toward evidence-based medicine, including early controlled studies on psychotherapy versus pharmacotherapy for major depressive disorder, atheoretical practical psychotherapy, and sex differences in suicide.
