Francis James Child

Francis James Child was an American scholar, educator, and folklorist born in Boston, Massachusetts, best known for his comprehensive collection of English and Scottish ballads now known as the Child Ballads[1][2]. He served as Harvard University's Boylston Professor of Rhetoric and Oratory and became Harvard's first professor of English in 1876, a role that enabled his focused academic research on folk ballads[1][5].
