Fikret Berkes

Fikret Berkes is a Turkish-Canadian ecologist and Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of Manitoba's Natural Resources Institute. He earned his B.Sc. and Ph.D. in Marine Sciences from McGill University in 1968 and 1973, respectively, and has dedicated his career to studying social-ecological systems, commons management, traditional ecological knowledge, and resilience. Author of numerous books including Sacred Ecology and over 250 peer-reviewed publications, he held a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair and served as President of the International Association for the Study of the Commons.
