James Baldwin was an American writer and civil rights activist born in Harlem, New York, in 1924, known for his essays, novels, plays, and poems exploring race, sexuality, and society. His breakthrough novel *Go Tell It on the Mountain* (1953) and essays like *Notes of a Native Son* and *The Fire Next Time* established him as a leading voice on the Black experience in America. He moved to Paris in 1948 to escape racial tensions and continued producing acclaimed works until his death in 1987.
