Eric Carle (Author, Illustrator)
Eric Carle was an acclaimed American author, illustrator, and designer of children's picture books, best known for The Very Hungry Caterpillar (1969), which has sold over 50 million copies and been translated into more than 66 languages. Born in Syracuse, New York, in 1929, he moved to Germany at age six, graduated from the Akademie der bildenden Künste in Stuttgart, and returned to the U.S. in 1952 to work as a graphic designer before launching his book career. He created over 70 books and co-founded The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, Massachusetts.
