Ellis Waterhouse

Sir Ellis Kirkham Waterhouse (1905–1985) was an English art historian specializing in Roman baroque and English painting, who served as Director of the National Galleries of Scotland (1949–52), Barber Professor at the University of Birmingham until 1970, and Director of the Yale Center for British Art (1970–73). During World War II, he was a Monuments Man, inspecting cultural sites in liberated Holland and aiding in the restitution of stolen art. He was knighted in 1975 and authored key works like 'Painting in Britain, 1530-1790'.
