Ellis Joffe

Ellis Joffe was a prominent scholar of Chinese military affairs, born in Shanghai in 1934 to Russian Jewish parents who had fled to China.[2][5] He studied political science at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, earned an MA from the University of Hong Kong, and a PhD from Harvard, before becoming a professor at the Hebrew University's Department of International Relations and East Asian Studies.[2] His key works, such as 'Party and Army' (1965) and 'The Chinese Army After Mao,' focused on the professionalization and political control of the People's Liberation Army.[1][2][8]
