Edward Gorey
Edward St. John Gorey (1925–2000) was an American writer, illustrator, and Tony Award-winning costume designer renowned for his pen-and-ink drawings depicting macabre, Victorian, and Edwardian scenes with arch humor and gothic sensibility.[1][3] A child prodigy who published over 100 of his own illustrated books starting with *The Unstrung Harp* in 1953, he also created cover art for authors like Samuel Beckett and T.S. Eliot, and designed the successful Broadway production of *Dracula*.[2][1] After serving in World War II and studying at Harvard, Gorey became a key figure in New York publishing and amassed a library of 25,000 books.[2][4]
