Edward Espe Brown
Edward Espe Brown (born 1945) is an American Zen priest, teacher, and author who began practicing Zen in 1965 and was ordained by Shunryu Suzuki Roshi in 1971, receiving the dharma name Jusan Kainei ('Longevity Mountain, Peaceful Sea'). He served as the first head cook at Tassajara Zen Mountain Center, authored bestselling cookbooks like The Tassajara Bread Book (1970) and No Recipe: Cooking as Spiritual Practice (2018), co-authored The Greens Cookbook with Deborah Madison, and helped found the vegetarian Greens Restaurant in San Francisco. Featured in the 2007 documentary How to Cook Your Life, he founded the Peaceful Sea Sangha and has taught meditation and cooking worldwide.
