Christopher Hann

Christopher Michael Hann (born 1953 in Cardiff, Wales) is a British social anthropologist specializing in economic anthropology, religion, and long-term history, with extensive field research in socialist and post-socialist Eastern Europe (Hungary, Poland), Turkey, and Xinjiang, China. He studied at Oxford (BA 1974) and Cambridge (PhD 1979), held positions at Cambridge and the University of Kent, and since 1999 has been Director at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle, Germany, now director emeritus. His work integrates comparative sociology across Eurasia, focusing on kinship, minorities, industry, and resilience.
