Charles W. Mills

Charles Wade Mills (January 3, 1951 – September 20, 2021) was a Caribbean-American philosopher born in London and raised in Jamaica, who specialized in political philosophy and critical race theory. He was a distinguished professor at the City University of New York and Northwestern University, and his seminal work *The Racial Contract* (1997) reshaped modern discussions on white supremacy and systemic racism. Mills is widely recognized for his sharp critiques of liberalism and race, arguing that racism is a fundamental element in the formation of the liberal political tradition.
