Charles R. McGimsey

Charles R. McGimsey III was a pioneering American archaeologist who joined the University of Arkansas faculty in 1957, teaching for over 30 years, founding the Department of Anthropology, and serving as its first chair from 1969 to 1972.[1][4] He directed the University of Arkansas Museum from 1960 to 1983 and was the inaugural director of the Arkansas Archeological Survey from 1967 to 1990, authoring influential works like *Public Archeology* (1972) and advocating for cultural resource management and preservation laws.[1] He died on January 20, 2015, in Fayetteville, Arkansas, at age 89.[4]
