Charles Keil

Charles Keil (b. 1939) is an American writer, musician, cultural anthropologist, and activist who made significant contributions to music and cultural studies. He is best known for his groundbreaking work Urban Blues (1966), which examined African-American musical culture through interviews and performances by B.B. King, and for his concept of 'groove' as central to musical experience. Throughout his career, he has been deeply committed to music education for children, founding MUSE (Musicians United for Superior Education, Inc.) and later the Jubilation Foundation.
