Charles de Montesquieu

Charles-Louis de Secondat, baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu, was a French Enlightenment political philosopher, judge, historian, and writer. He is best known for *The Spirit of Laws* (1748), which strongly influenced modern ideas about the separation of powers and constitutional government.
