Joe William Haldeman (born June 9, 1943) is an American science fiction author best known for his novel The Forever War (1974), inspired by his Vietnam War experiences as a combat engineer where he was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart.[1][2] He holds a BS in physics and astronomy from the University of Maryland and an MFA in creative writing from the Iowa Writers' Workshop, and served as an adjunct professor of writing at MIT from 1983 until 2014.[1][6] His works, including Forever Peace (1997) and The Hemingway Hoax (1991), have won multiple Hugo and Nebula Awards, and he is an SFWA Grand Master.[3][8]
