Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis (1839–1908) was a Brazilian poet, novelist, short-story writer, and literary critic, widely regarded as one of the greatest writers in Brazilian literature. His work is noted for psychological depth, irony, and innovative narrative techniques, and he helped found the Brazilian Academy of Letters.[1][3][6]
