J.K. Rowling is a British author best known for creating the Harry Potter series, a seven-volume collection of books about a young wizard. Born Joanne Rowling in Gloucestershire, England, she conceived the idea for Harry Potter in 1990 while on a delayed train and spent five years writing the first book before its publication in 1997. Beyond Harry Potter, she has also written adult fiction and crime novels under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith.
