Bernard R. Gelbaum

Bernard Russell Gelbaum was a mathematician and academic administrator who served as a professor at the University of Minnesota, University of California, Irvine (where he was the first chair of the math department), and as an emeritus professor at the University at Buffalo. He was also a native of Minnesota who moved to California as a teenager and later became a math prodigy who used mathematical formulas to pick stocks and bonds for wealthy investors in hedge funds for three decades. Gelbaum died on March 22, 2005, in Laguna Beach, California, and was known for anonymously donating $20 million annually to the ACLU.
