Basil Hall Chamberlain
Basil Hall Chamberlain (1850–1935) was a prominent British Japanologist and professor of Japanese at Tokyo Imperial University during the late 19th century Meiji era. He pioneered English translations of Japanese classics like the Kojiki and waka poetry, conducted research on Ainu and Ryukyu cultures, and authored the influential encyclopedia Things Japanese (1890). His diverse works introduced Japanese language, literature, and culture to the West, including early haiku translations.[1][2][3]
