Awet Tewelde Weldemichael

Awet Tewelde Weldemichael is an Associate Professor and Queen’s National Scholar in African and World History at Queen’s University, specializing in the contemporary history and political economy of Northeast Africa and island Southeast Asia. A former refugee goatherd turned award-winning author, he has written extensively on topics ranging from 20th-century colonialism to 21st-century maritime piracy, with a focus on amplifying the voices of the unheard and marginalized. He is a member of the Royal Society of Canada and has published notable works including 'Piracy in Somalia: Violence and Development in the Horn of Africa' and 'Third World Colonialism and Strategies of Liberation'.
