Assata Shakur

Assata Shakur, born JoAnne Chesimard, is a Black revolutionary, author, and political activist who was a member of the Black Panther Party and Black Liberation Army. Convicted in 1977 for the murder of a New Jersey State Trooper in a controversial trial, she escaped prison in 1979 and was granted political asylum in Cuba, where she wrote her 1988 autobiography Assata: An Autobiography. She is also known as the step-aunt of Tupac Shakur and remains a symbol of resistance against racism and oppression.[1][2][3]
