Andrew K. Scherer is an anthropological archaeologist and biological anthropologist specializing in Mesoamerica, particularly the Maya civilization. He directs the Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World at Brown University and co-directs excavations along the Usumacinta River in Mexico and Guatemala. His research focuses on mortuary archaeology, bioarchaeology, violence, ritual practice, and political organization, with key publications including 'As the Gods Kill: Morality and Social Violence among the Precolonial Maya' (2025) and 'Mortuary Landscapes of the Classic Maya' (2015).
