GRRRLZ is set in 1968, a tumultuous time in world politics, with public protests for a range of issues, including civil rights, the environment and women's liberation. Kathy Brown is one of the students taking part in many of these protests, but she has missed so much of her education that she is suspended from Oxford University. She finds employment at a somewhat challenging school called Ruffwood Park, where she is responsible for the most notorious form, the Lower Fifth. The 1960s setting affords many opportunities for songs from times past, including an homage to early Aretha Franklin in the main title song, 'Listen Up, Man', the Gilbert and Sullivan pastiche 'Grabitall and Tring' and the patter song 'The Catalogue of Vice'. The book, lyrics and music for GRRRLZ was written in 2020-21 by Chris Gill, originally as a screenplay, and subsequently as a play which was first performed in Oxford and London in 2021.
