After a breakup threatens to afflict his mental health, Jasper Kilburn decides to leave his hometown in the hope of discovering his purpose in existence. He departs the post-industrial lands of the Black Country and journeys to the maritime city of Portsmouth. On the shores of the Solent Jasper finds friendship and love and even the possibility of opening his heart to those close to him. Amidst the romance, the student parties and conversations about history, a darkness converges and the Membrane returns. Soon Jasper will face the shades, a nebulous force from beyond the membrane, and while the denizens of Portsmouth are being dragged into a turquoise abyss to be experimented on, a deadly virus locks down the country. Gradually Jasper begins to understand what his purpose is, though it could mean accepting a grim fate and becoming something otherworldly. What they are today, they will not be tomorrow.
