Morris Ware, Tiles & Art of George Cartlidge

This book contains details of the life and work of George Cartlidge, the North Staffordshire artist, potter and designer, who is best known for his Morris Ware range of Art Pottery designed for Sampson Hancock & Sons, and for his Portrait Tiles of leading dignitaries in the early years of the last century. Included in the book are reproductions of an 1892 Tile Catalogue of the Sherwin & Cotton Company together with several plates from that Company's book 'Tiles for Interior Decoration'. Details of the modeling and production of the Portrait and Picture Tiles are included, as well as eye witness accounts of the process. Latter chapters cover details of his efforts to establish an American Company to produce the Tiles, the production of the Portrait Tiles by J. H. Barratt & Co. and the Art Pottery he made in his studio in Rudyard. The book has illustrations of many of the Morris Ware Designs George did for Sampson Hancock & Sons, the first such comprehensive record of this magnificent range of Art Pottery.
