A Year of Winter

1984 in the Durham the year of the strike, of pickets and scabs, of father against son, of housewives with pinched faces, and bankrupt local businesses. "It feels, says a girl in the pit village of Belgate, "as if it's been a year of winter..." And yet life goes on, amid the distress, the anger, the fear. Fran Drummond, a young widow, can see that between the warring forces of Government and NUM, a community is suffering and being crushed.
