Attractive color photos depicting construction sites dominate this picture book, which uses simple text to describe the machines that move material. Some photos include a superimposed arrow pointing to the object described, and the untouched images of some of the more complicated machines, such as the pulley, would have benefited from that. Still, this offers an adequate introduction to machinery, progressing logically from simple movers, such as shovels and wheelbarrows, to complex machines with moving parts, including scissor lifts and cherry pickers. Except for a confusing suggested experiment on the last page (the accompanying photo of a plastic bottle doesn't match the can referred to in the text), the back matter is helpful, including a glossary as well as recommended books and Web sites.
