This entry in the Remarkable People series tries to do a lot. It introduces soccer star David Beckham, explains the game to the uninitiated, and advises students about writing biography. The game is adequately explained, and when it comes to Beckham, the oversize book does a respectable, if staid, job of explaining the star's importance to the sport of soccer. Still, it leaves unanswered questions. Readers will wonder why Beckham left Manchester United, since it was always his dream to play there. The book is full of interesting photos, color and black-and-white, especially of Beckham as a youth. Kids probably won't be tempted to write biography from the two-page spread featuring a "concept web" of questions, but their teachers might get some assignment ideas.
