These first three volumes introduce a new 12-volume series, The Smithsonian Guide to Historic America . The remaining nine volumes are scheduled for publication this spring and in early 1990. The general editor, Roger G. Kennedy, is executive director of the National Museum of the Smithsonian. The books are arranged geographically in order to assist the traveler in finding sites of interest in nearby areas. In addition to historical background and descriptions, which are the heart of the series, addresses and phone numbers are supplied. The indexes are exceptionally thorough, listing geographical locations, names of landmarks and sites, important persons associated with a site, and historical events. The book is an ideal size for travel at 5 8 .
