"Web of Freedom" continues the adventures of prince M'nalo Fanta Bembo who we first met in "The Sorcerer's Drum." Here we find him rowing towards a Caribbean island having just escaped from a slave ship that he helped commandeer from the slavers. Several full moons later, he's still discovering the beauty of this idyllic isle when native forest people capture him because to them, though a savage, he is a manifestation of a sacred creature. In time he earns their trust, learns their ways, and 'lives well' with these nomadic people. Eventually he separates from them and sets out by sea on a raft seeking 'people like himself.' He goes adrift and is lucky to be rescued from a hurricane by buccaneers whose captain is an opium addict, yet a man of high principles. M'nalo spends a while with these pirates until the captain, thinking of M'nalo's safety, leaves him on his brother's prosperous sugar plantation in the Caribbean. On this grand stage the lives and loves of slaves and enslavers play out in vivid detail, and living as a free African among black slaves and bonded whites, M'nalo experiences are unique. In due time he makes friends, is respected, and even inspires followers. Then, with unforeseen circumstances, he falls in love."Joy is a mighty muscle!" is the exuberant opening line as M'nalo rows towards freedom and a fate he could never have contemplated. You will enjoy this novel.
