Three handicapped young boys discover the true treasures of nature and friendship on the coast of Maine in the late 1960's. From within their secret hideout, the lads magically learn to use the shells and artifacts that daily wash up on the beach to create items that are useful and beautiful out of nothing. They also make a sport of covertly spying on the hippies that frequent "their beach." It is during one of their spy missions that the boys become the sole witnesses to a terrible injustice. Knowing that no one will believe what they saw, they vow to take their secret to their graves. Fate has ideas of its own.As they enter high school, societal pressures threaten to segregate and therefore separate the physically and mentally disadvantaged friends. A beautiful student artist, herself a social outcast, joins with the trio and together they form a secret club in the lamp room of an old lighthouse. Like the lighthouse keepers they derive their name from, the "Wickies" vow to guide and protect each other from any perils and hazards that might threaten to come between them or dash their dreams.Despite their collective numerous barriers and challenges, the foursome manage to help each other to go on and lead normal and productive lives, that is until they are unfairly targeted in a nasty smear campaign launched by a power hungry politician. What the stop-at-nothing lawmaker doesn't know is the potentially devastating secret that three of these companions share that could destroy his career. No one expects what will happen next nor can they possibly imagine how it will end.
