Forces such as wind and rushing water wear away bits of rock. These small pieces of rock are known as sediment. Over time, sediment builds up and forms layers. After millions of years, the heavy layers pack together, and under pressure, change into sedimentary rock. Minerals and even animal remains can form sedimentary rocks.
