"Research" means careful investigation into a subject, which is more than simply looking up information about it. But scholars have been researching medieval Europe for centuries: What is the point of doing further independent research if all the facts are already known?
This misunderstands what history is. History is the study of past events-all past events. Each individual has a personal history, which is the story of his or her live. It is the sum of the histories-every second of every minute of every hour-of the hundreds of thousands of people with whom he/she was involved. That is billions of tiny pieces of information, more than any one historian could ever hope to master.
