Boone McCallister was interviewed in 1937 as a contributor to the American Legends Collection, a part of the Federal Writers Project. He narrated the events concerning a dangerous cattle drive in Florida when that state was very much cattle country and not at all a place of citrus growers and tourists. Nor was his story just about driving cattle. It was also about pursuit of a gang of desperadoes who had pillaged and set fire to the McCallister Ranch and taken young Lena captive. He began the interview with these words: ". . . I?ve got something I want to say right up front, and that is that I did not feed David Klee to an alligator. That damned rumor has hounded me my whole life."
