Traveling the United States with itinerant farm-working parents and an older brother is exciting for Lenny. But one day he discovers they re not really his parents. In his search for answers he finds out that his father murdered his mother, and that he was abandoned on a porch in Nebraska. Subtle changes take place in Lenny s life, and he and his brother begin to drift apart. On his quest to learn the truth, he encounters Billy Thatcher, a small-time criminal whose father is a member of a violent prison gang. He journeys back to the valley of south Texas and visits Rosa, his first love, and also meets a corrupt Mexican federal agent who has other plans for Lenny. He finally meets his biological grandfather who adds bits and pieces to the puzzle and it pushes Lenny over the edge. Now on trial for capital murder, Lenny depends on his brother Joseph to defend him, and keep him off Texas death row.
