This is the eighth of the "Blue Bloods" series and readers should not attempt to jump in without having read the previous books. Schuyler Van Alen and Jack Force are now "bonded" which also means that Jack has betrayed his twin sister (in this incarnation), Mimi, who was left standing at the altar, so to speak. He plans to return to Manhattan and face the blood trial to determine which of them will survive, but Schuyler is sure he means to simply let Mimi win and persuades Jack to accompany her to Alexandria in a continuing search for the crucial Gate of Promise. Oliver, who is still in love with Schuyler, is now Mimi's familiar and has agreed to accompany her on a trip to Egypt from where they will enter Hell in search of Mimi's true love, Kingsley Martin.
