A Spur Award-winning Author -- Bass Reeves was a man of color and a deputy U.S marshal. Bass's son Bennie was a barber, and a good one, before he shot his wife for cheating and disappeared. The U.S. Marshal had reservations about having Bass serve the warrant, but for Bass there were none: his son broke the law, and was a fugitive. Bass and longtime partner Dave Adams set out to find and arrest Bennie, which they did. But Cherokee Bob Dozier and his renegades showed up and freed him.
