Dakota Oratory (1695-1874)

This unique volume, the first in a series of three oratory-related books, is devoted to the speechs and the stories behind them of the Eastern Dakota, or Santee, tribes. To a notable degree the collection becomes a history in their own words. The reader will find reference to important events, such as the Dakota War of 1862, as well as expressive statements which give a sense of Dakota culture and religion. Over 80 speeches are included.
