This book was written for people who occasionally wonder why and how certain things - lets call them artifacts - were made, way back when. This book is about the Roman aqueduct of Nimes, including the Pont du Card. It was not so much my purpose, though, to describe this one marvel of ancient engineering as to muse about how life was in those times, during the early years of the principate, how those shadowy colleagues approached their jobs, what motivated and what frustrated them, and whence their ideas came.
