Primarily an account of the agreements which have been reached in the international telecommunications community on standards for the design and operation of transmission networks based on the synchronous transmission philosophy, first called SONET, which is now a subset of SDH, the synchronous digital hierarchy. Avoids descriptions of actual equipment and deployment plans, which are shrouded in commercial secrecy, notoriously ephemeral, and not very good reading anyway, to focus on basic features and generic features.
