Most new boats available today are stock fiberglass boats, manufactured to be acceptable to the "average" person. Yet most owners of new stock fiberglass boats -- and used ones as well -- are not "average" people and find deficiencies in their boats. They find that some areas of the hull structure need strengthening, portholes need to be added or filled in, hatches require waterproofing, freeing ports should be enlarged, berths should be added, and plumbing and electrical systems require improvements. There are hundreds of things -- big and small -- that can be done to stock fiberglass boats to make them more suitable for the owners' uses. As the author says in his introduction, there are four good reasons to modify your boat: (1) to make the boat safer; (2) to make her more comfortable; (3) to improve performance; and (4) to improve appearance.
