This is a facsimile of the limited edition published by Arion Press, which "produces some of the most beautiful limited-edition books in the world," according to the New York Times. To illustrate the first edition of her only children's book in 1939, Gertrude Stein selected Clement Hurd from a field of competitors who submitted their work to her. For the Arion edition, proofs from linoleum and wood blocks cut for the second edition were modified for photo-engraving. Edith Thacher Hurd, wife of the well-known illustrator and herself a noted children's book author, wrote the afterword, an informative memoir that details the history and creation of the original publication and includes correspondence between Stein and Hurd.
