The whaling ship "Southern Cross" is caught in the polar ice of the Antarctic, and 500 men face death. When the rescue ships are forced to return to base, all hope is seemingly lost. But as the whaling stations of South Georgia prepare to close down for the winter, two lifeboats sail into harbour.
