This thorough yet inexpensive guide describes mammal, bird, and insect pests and explains how to control or destroy them. Some species can be both pests and beneficial predators (starlings eat grubs, cockroaches eat bedbugs), and the author suggests certain species be tolerated. But for the most part he reviews chemical methods of pest control, explaining which toxins are effective against which species, and how to use them safely and effectively. Portions of the guide draw on USDA Home & Garden Bulletins, but states and localities may prohibit some of the pesticides discussed. There are cautionary notes about safety throughout, and a good final chapter on storage, disposal, and accidental poisoning. Clear and comprehensible. Laurie Tynan, Huntingdon Cty.
