Grade 7-10–This is a passable, though superficial, biography of the great French emperor. Landau adequately covers the principal events of Napoleon's life, but little comes through about his personality or motivations. The book includes one (small) map, small black-and-white photos and reproductions, and a time line, but no glossary. At least one quotation is badly mangled from its source. Nothing else is in print for this audience; Raymond and Loretta Obstfeld's Napoleon Bonaparte (Gale, 2001) is an intense, complex collection of readings best suited for AP and college students, while Miriam Greenblatt's Napoleon Bonaparte and Imperial France (Benchmark, 2005) takes a more simplified approach for younger readers.–Ann W.
