Cantor has produced an excellent guide to the hidden treasures of African American history. Over 300 sites across the United States and Ontario are described, with selection based on historical significance and interest to both the general populace and historian. The landmarks are ar ranged into six regions, each introduced with a map indicating the sites and a list by state. Entries vary in length, from a paragraph to several pages. Each includes a historical sketch detailing the site's sig nificance and practical information such as directions, hours, fees, and related sites. An introductory essay on African American history and a timeline place the entries in proper context. Illustrations abound. The arrangement of the guide is somewhat awkward since it is alphabetical by name of the region, but use is facilitated by thorough indexing.
