A four-page time line begins with the year 4000 B.C. when the Inuit settled in North America and ends in 1998 when a Canadian icebreaker was frozen into the ice during a research mission. The environmental concerns of global warming and accounts of recent scientific explorations, including the current SHEBA (Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic) project, are all described in an objective style. Details are economically explained either within the narrative or in relevant sidebars. The two-page glossary defines terms and includes pronunciation guides.
