Falling on hard times after her husband's death, Caroline Evans finds that things begin to change rather dramatically for her and her two pre-teen children when they meet (and she falls in love with) the dashing and wealthy Anthony Fleming. But when they move into Anthony's very well-appointed apartment in The Rockwell, an exclusive building just off Central Park, all three are beset by bad dreams, feelings of paranoia, and strange smells and sounds. And Caroline's discoveries about Anthony's mysterious past don't help matters. But all of this pales in comparison to what is really going on at The Rockwell....
